Meeting Information for Fall 2008
The Linux User Group of VCU will enter a hiatus for the summer months. Be sure to check you inbox and this space for information about our Fall 2008 meeting times.
As always, we welcome members from all of the VCU community, including faculty and staff.
What is GNU/Linux?
The operating system GNU/Linux is freely available from this group, as well as from many sites on the Internet. It is a fully developed, user-friendly operating system at this point, much like Mac OSX and Windows. There are a few major differences however. First, there is a lot of freely available software for GNU/Linux that can be installed quickly and easily. It is almost all available for free. GNU/Linux is also community maintained, so critical bugs and security issues are usually handled very quickly. There are almost no viruses for GNU/Linux, and most people do not use any sort of virus protection software, although it is available.
