G+LUGVCU

Welcome!

We are a student group at VCU. We are dedicated to promoting GNU/Linux, Free Software and open source applications and showing how students and the VCU community can benefit from their use.

Welcome New Students

The GNU+Linux Group of VCU welcome new students. We have many events/activities in store for this year, which we are very excited about. If you wish to be updated on our activities then we encourage you to sign up for our mailing list. In case you don't get the message, then you could check out our event calendar here on the site.

Kick Start Meeting Information

Our first offical meeting will be at the Student Commons this Wednesday, August 27th at 7:00pm (Look for the penguin). Anyone is allowed to come, and if you are a VCU student then you can get a free VCULUG T-shirt. There are a few purposes that we would like to address in this meeting.

As always, we welcome members from all of the VCU community, including faculty and staff.

What is GNU/Linux?

The operating system GNU/Linux is freely available from this group, as well as from many sites on the Internet. It is a fully developed, user-friendly operating system at this point, much like Mac OSX and Windows. There are a few major differences however. First, there is a lot of freely available software for GNU/Linux that can be installed quickly and easily. It is almost all available for free. GNU/Linux is also community maintained, so critical bugs and security issues are usually handled very quickly. There are almost no viruses for GNU/Linux, and most people do not use any sort of virus protection software, although it is available.
